京都市中京区越後町に位置する町家を改修し、海外在住の芸術家の拠点とするためのプロジェクト。敷地は六角通に面しており、堀川通と油小路通の間の多くの路地や小路に囲まれた地区にある。通りにではなく路地に面した家も多いなか、偶然にもこの家の通り庭は六角通り向かいの細い路地の延長線上に位置していた。そこで、この計画では、通り庭を分散していた既存の間仕切り壁を撤去し北側の通りから奥庭までの動線を一直線に繋ぎ、光と風が抜ける通り土間とした。奥の庭は作業場へと続き、東隣の路地と鉄扉で繋がる。これらの周辺環境のみちの空間体験を建築内部にも引き込むことで「町」と「家」の境界のようなものを取り除こうと考えた。 「町」の中に「家」があるのではなく、「家」の中でも「町」の存在や空気を感じることができるようなことを意識した。通り庭沿いに設けられた鉄製の梯子状フレームは、間仕切り壁を撤去した既存の木造に対しての水平耐力を補う柔らかい構造補強として屋根まで達している。 この梯子状フレームに既存の床板などの古材を自由に配置することで違い棚として使うことを提案した。棚として使ったり、町から探してきたものをここに置き飾ったり、日々の生活が滲み出ることで周辺のみちと一続きとなった路地奥のような「町」と「家」が混じりあった空間となることを願っている。
Este proyecto consiste en la rehabilitación de una machiya (casa tradicional japonesa) situada en Echigo-chō, distrito de Nakagyō, Kioto, con el fin de convertirla en una residencia y base de trabajo para un artista que vive en el extranjero. El terreno da a la calle Rokkaku y se encuentra en una zona rodeada de numerosos callejones y pasajes entre las avenidas Horikawa y Aburakōji. Mientras muchas casas del área se orientan hacia los callejones en lugar de hacia la calle principal, ocurrió que el tōriniwa (pasillo-jardín) de esta vivienda se alineaba de manera natural con un estrecho callejón al otro lado de la calle Rokkaku. Por ello, el proyecto eliminó los tabiques que fragmentaban el tōriniwa, creando un eje continuo que conecta directamente la calle del norte con el jardín posterior: un corredor de tierra batida por donde circulan libremente la luz y el viento. El jardín del fondo se prolonga hasta el taller del artista y se conecta, mediante una puerta metálica, con el callejón del lado este. Al incorporar dentro del edificio la experiencia espacial de los caminos y pasajes circundantes, se busca disolver los límites entre la “ciudad” y la “casa”. Más que situar una casa dentro de la ciudad, la intención fue hacer que, dentro de la casa, se pueda sentir la presencia y el aire de la ciudad. A lo largo del tōriniwa, se instaló una estructura metálica en forma de escalera que refuerza suavemente, hasta la cubierta, la resistencia lateral del edificio de madera existente tras retirar los muros. Colocando libremente sobre esta estructura tablones antiguos y otras maderas recuperadas, se propone su uso como estantería o chigai-dana. Al usarlas para exhibir objetos encontrados por la ciudad o elementos del día a día, el espacio aspira a fundirse con el entorno, convirtiéndose en un callejón interior donde “casa” y “ciudad” se entrelazan y conviven.
This project involves the renovation of a machiya townhouse located in Echigo-chō, Nakagyō Ward, Kyoto, to serve as a base for an artist residing overseas. The site faces Rokkaku Street, in a district surrounded by many small alleys and lanes between Horikawa Street and Aburakōji Street. While many houses in the area face these narrow alleys rather than the main street, it happened by chance that the tōriniwa (passage garden) of this house aligns with the narrow alley directly across Rokkaku Street. In response to this, the design removes the existing partition walls that divided the tōriniwa, creating a straight axis that connects the street on the north to the inner garden at the back—a continuous earthen-floor corridor through which light and wind flow freely. The rear garden extends to the artist’s workspace and connects to the alley on the east through an iron gate. By drawing the spatial experience of the surrounding paths and alleys into the architecture itself, the project seeks to dissolve the boundary between the “town” and the “house.” Rather than placing a house within the town, the intention was to allow the presence and atmosphere of the town to be felt within the house. Along the tōriniwa, a ladder-shaped steel frame has been installed to provide gentle lateral reinforcement for the existing wooden structure where the walls were removed, extending up to the roof. By freely placing reclaimed timber, such as old floorboards, onto this frame, it becomes a set of shelves—a chigai-dana—that can be used for display. It is hoped that as these shelves fill with found objects from the town and traces of daily life, the space will blur into one continuous experience—like an alley deep within the town where “house” and “city” coexist and intermingle.
